Languages

Liberia has about sixteen living languages

Liberia is home to sixteen unique languages belonging to various language groups:

  • Bassa, Belleh, Dan (Gio), Dei (Dey), Gola, Gbandi, Grebo, Kpelle, Kissi, Krahn, Kru, Lorma, Mano, Mandingo, Mende, and Vai.

These languages face significant challenges due to the dominance of English, especially in urban areas like Monrovia and within the education system. This dominance results in a decline in the intergenerational transmission of Indigenous languages, leaving many of them critically endangered.
