About us

We are the Liberia Endangered Language Project (LIBELP). In partnership with language experts and communities, we create free online language learning courses and materials to help them keep their languages alive.

More than 16 languages are spoken in Liberia, and due to colonization or the influence of English, nearly half of these languages are endangered.

Each language itself is valuable. Additionally, language revival is linked to happier, healthier kids, advances in science, and more resilient communities.

When you help a community protect their language, you aren’t just protecting words – you’re protecting a cultural identity and the well-being of real people. LIBELP is a non-profit organization registered in Liberia and donors like you make our work possible.

If you would like to make a difference, please donate to support our work.

Our Mission

We aim to safeguard Liberia’s endangered languages by fostering education, developing accessible learning resources, and promoting their everyday use. We strive to enable future generations to connect with their cultural roots and heritage by preserving these languages.

Our Vision

We envision a Liberia where all communities have the resources and opportunities to reclaim, strengthen, revitalize, and promote their endangered languages, and every Liberian language has the opportunity to flourish.

Our Values

Empowerment & Ownership – We believe that Liberia’s Indigenous languages and the materials created for those languages belong to the community of ancestors, speakers, and descendants of those languages. We seek to cooperatively develop resources for each Liberian community to self-determine the future of their language.

Respect and Collaboration—We value the rights and traditions of others. We approach our relationships as people who are passionate about preservation and recognizing the community’s leadership.

Diversity and Inclusion – We recognize the value and importance of each language for their communities. We believe every language strengthens humanity as a whole. Each and every community deserves the opportunity to teach, learn, and sustain their language.

Technology and Community Access—The Liberian communities should have access to technologies and support that assist our language journeys in ways that reflect our cultural values. We believe technology should reflect the community’s culture, practices, and ways of knowing.
